English Reading Course

Spinnaker College offers three different English reading courses, which are designed for different levels of English language competence. In these classes, students use a wide variety of motivating materials to practice reading skills at different levels, such as skimming and scanning, giving summaries, search reading, as well as reading for detail.

Our courses encourage learners to read for pleasure through the use of graded readers, internet materials and the print media. Students on our English reading courses are also motivated to research independently and develop their own areas of interest, whilst sharing their discoveries in presentations to class mates.

Everyday English

LEVELS 1 & 2

This course is run with the our English writing courses, students develop and practice reading a wide variety of written pieces that they will encounter in everyday life such as signs, rules and regulations, instructions, forms and public information.

In addition students will be given the opportunity to explore the internet and print media as well as studying songs, poems and graded English literature.

Reading English at an Intermediate Level

LEVELS 3 & 4

This course is designed for students wishing to further develop and broaden their English reading skills and prepare them for taking an IELTS course. Students are given the opportunity to experience a wide variety of contemporary written language and types of media.

Emphasis is put on reading efficiently and the skills developed are:

  • Skimming and scanning
  • Reading for detail
  • Understanding unknown vocabulary from context
  • Identifying topic
  • Understanding opinions
  • Finding information and reference links

Upper Intermediate & Advanced Reading

LEVELS 5 & 6

These English reading courses are designed for those wishing to take IELTS for entry to university and Higher Education. It is also suitable for those wishing to take other English tests or exams such as TOEIC, TOEFL and Cambridge ESOL.

Students develop their skills in reading for specific information, gist or opinions as well as practicing the full range of tasks they will have to undertake during a test or exam.

Students will further develop the skills they were introduced to and practiced in the Foundation IELTS course as well as the following tasks they will need to get their required score or result:

  • Short answer questions
  • Sentence and summary completion
  • Paragraph summaries and matching headings
  • Identifying style and text structure
  • Multiple-choice questions
  • Description schemes
  • Labelling diagrams and charts
  • Practicing true/false and not given statements
