At Spinnaker College we offer three levels of English listening skills courses, which are designed for different levels of English speaking competence. An emphasis is put on vocabulary building, fluency and pronunciation.
In these English classes, students experience a wide variety of motivating activities to practise listening skills. Our courses put an emphasis on understanding and interaction, achieved with genuine contemporary materials. Songs are a particularly popular and useful area for developing English listening skills.
Below are the various courses for listening skills on offer at Spinnaker College:
Everyday English Courses
LEVELS 1 & 2
These courses are run with the Speaking Skills classes. Students develop and practice listening and responding to language useful for everyday conversations and engage in motivating communicative activities, useful for real life situations.
Many of the English classes take place outside the school for genuine practical experience.
Intermediate Skills Course
LEVELS 3 & 4
Levels three and four are designed for students wishing to further develop and broaden their English listening skills and prepare them for taking an IELTS course. Students are given the opportunity to experience language in a wide variety of situations and types of media.
Students will also develop their ability to understand different English accents and uses of vocabulary and idiom.
Upper Intermediate & Advanced Course for Listening
LEVELS 5 & 6
The course is designed for those wishing to take IELTS for entry to university and Higher Education. This English listening skills course is also suitable for those wishing to take other English tests or exams such as TOEIC, TOEFL and Cambridge ESOL.
Students develop their skills in listening for specific information, gist or opinions as well as practicing the full range of tasks they will have to undertake during a test or exam.
Areas covered include:
- Note and form completion
- Matching lists and classification
- Labelling maps and diagrams
- Describing flow charts, pie charts and statistics
- Answering questions and making summaries
