October 2011

Dear Students,

With Halloween at the end of the month expect to see British people carving jack-o’-lanterns out of turnips, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing and trick-or-treating.  Look out for all the people in scary costumes; maybe some of the teachers will dress up! Also this month, if you’re planning on going to a top British university, mark 6th October in your diary, when University of Southampton will be visiting Spinnaker College. Finally, enjoy the last of the hot, sunny days of Autumn….

Restaurant Review

Hong Kong Tea Bar

If you are looking for a Chinese restaurant, ‘Hong Kong Tea Bar’ is one of your best choices.  It’s not far from the city centre, just near to the end of Commercial Road.  After you are tired from shopping, you can pop by there and have an amazing Chinese dish.  There are many seats and it is big enough to welcome a large group of friends.  You can choose the dishes from the menu – there are many kinds of meals, for example, pork, meat, prawn or duck.  The important thing is the price – it’s cheap and reasonable for a huge dish for one person and the taste is great and makes you feel like you are in China!  If you have a chance, just go!

Chichester

We went to Chichester by train yesterday afternoon with our teacher Damian. The first thing we saw was the Cathedral – its style is Gothic-Norman.  It’s a very big cathedral with several sculptures.  Then we went to the main street and we went shopping in many kinds of shops.  Also, we saw Priory Park, which is very big and wonderful.  Finally we ate some good sweets and came back to Portsmouth.  We think everybody should go to Chichester because it’s very quiet and peaceful town with many beautiful shops and places to see.

Film Review

Final Destination 5

After a catastrophic event like a tsunami or an earthquake, the fear of death finds you in each moment and leaves you in a state of permanent terror.  Final Destination makes this fear real. After a premonition, the protagonist of the film saves 8 people from a predestined death, but nobody can escape from their destiny…
The fifth episode follows the saga with a series of cruel ways to die, that at a certain point becomes a game.  The spectator has to guess how the next person will die.  The mixture of horror, thriller and action sometimes creates suspense, but actually suggests hilarity.  If the director thought to exorcize the fear of death, he failed.  Do you want to become a fatalist? You have to see ‘Final Destination 5’!
